Our latest Illawarra Hunting Club meeting at Towradgi Beach Hotel was a huge success, with over 60 members—our biggest turnout yet. The highlight of the night was Brian Boyle, Australia’s leading authority on hog deer hunting, who delivered an insightful presentation on hog deer behaviour, habitat, and sustainable hunting practices.

Hog Deer Hunting & Conservation Insights

Brian provided a deep dive into Snake Island, home to the Hog Deer Research Centre, where critical studies on hog deer population dynamics, genetics, and conservation take place. This research is key to ensuring a healthy, self-sustaining herd through controlled hunting measures.

A major takeaway was the Hog Deer Ballot, a highly sought-after system granting hunters access to prime hog deer hunting locations in Victoria, including Snake Island. With demand high, Brian stressed the importance of understanding the application process and regulations for this unique hunting opportunity.

Upcoming Club Hunt – 28th to 30th March

Looking ahead, our next Illawarra Hunting Club event is a club hunt at Vulcan State Forest from March 28th to 30th. While both Vulcan and neighbouring Gurnang State Forests are currently fully booked, hunters should keep an eye on the DPI website for any last-minute vacancies.
