April 25 - Club Hunt - Bondi State Forest

Despite high hopes and solid attendance, the April hunt turned out to be one of the quieter ones – at least when it came to pulling the trigger.

For a hunt right in the heart of the rut, the forest was surprisingly subdued. There was barely a croak or a roar to be heard. That said, almost everyone saw deer, which was promising – just no opportunities that came together.

Joe and George got honked. Luke and Pete spotted deer through the thermal and tried to cut them off, but were outsmarted and outmanoeuvred. Harry had a Sambar hind coming into his calls, only to get distracted cooking up cup-a-soups for himself and Zee. The hind hung around in the fringes for a solid 15 minutes, curiously watching their afternoon tea antics before quietly slipping away once Harry went for a stroll. Vic and Alex had fun looking for Koalas :).

Tim managed to kick off his tally for the year with two rabbits. Unfortunately, he also had the misfortune of picking up a flat tyre thanks to a bone on the track. Looks like Tim Luck is living proof that names can be ironic—first he drowns the Ranger, now he’s boned a tyre!

The forest itself was busy – a bit too busy. Yet again, campers had set up smack in the middle of prime deer territory, surrounded by tree rubs. That’s two hunts in a row where punters have decided to camp right on a deer highway. If they were aiming to spook every animal in the area, mission accomplished.

On the bright side, morale was high thanks to Alysa (the President’s better half), who cooked up a storm for two days. Endless chicken wings, fried noodles and homemade crisps kept spirits up even as the deer stayed just out of reach. Big thanks to her.

Congratulations Pon!

Big congratulations to club member Pon, who recently bagged two solid bucks during his time in Maragle State Forest. Pon was lucky enough to score a spot through the annual NSW State Forest ballot, and he certainly made the most of it. His effort, patience, and sharp shooting paid off in challenging country, bringing home a well-earned result. Well done mate – a great reminder of what’s out there when you put in the time and get the draw.
