A Hunt to Remember

Another strong turnout for our July hunt in Bondi, with a solid crew of members making the trip south for what proved to be an unforgettable weekend.

Normally, our hunt reviews are packed with photos from the weekend — but this month, one animal stood tall above the rest.

After plenty of close calls, honks, and near misses over past hunts, Josh Cain finally sealed the deal with his very first deer, and what a way to do it! His first was nothing short of a stud, a trophy that will be remembered not only by him but by everyone who was there to witness it.

On behalf of the entire committee, a huge congratulations to Josh. It’s been a privilege to share in your journey, from the ups and downs to this unforgettable moment. The excitement around camp was electric, and we’re all proud to celebrate this milestone with you, but none more than that of your proud father David.

Bondi did not disappoint. Sambar were plentiful, though those wise old stags were off to bed before legal hunting light, keeping us on our toes and reminding us just how cunning they can be.

There were some close calls that really got the blood pumping, including a gruelling 3.5-hour stalk that got within just 6 metres of another fine specimen — only for spotters Bangor and Hayden, watching from the other side of the gully, to see him bolt and disappear over several gullies. There was also plenty of pig action, with a few groups keeping hunters entertained as they waited for the chance to get one up on Josh.

The Pilliga is NEXT !

Here’s to many more hunts, many more memories, and hopefully a few more stags of this calibre.

Upcoming Club Hunt – The Pilliga Awaits

The countdown is over — tomorrow the Illawarra Hunting Club heads west to the Pilliga for a full week of action.

This trip promises to be a big one, with pigs and goats set firmly in our sights. The country is tough, the days will be long, and the rewards, if history is anything to go by, will be well worth the effort.

Of course, no trip to the Pilliga would be complete without keeping one eye out for the odd Yowie lurking in the shadows. Whether myth or mystery, the legend always adds an extra thrill when the fire crackles at night.
